Pointed out to me by Roger an article in “Sailing for Today” regarding white and red diesel which could well be an issue shortly. The article said that a marina on the East coast ( but may well apply locally some time ) were staying with red diesel. White diesel in the UK apparently now contains 2.5% bio-diesel and soon to be increased to 5.0%  and is no longer safe to use in marine diesel engines for long term. Also if left in the tank for some time like over winter the in-tank filters sludge up and lines and filters get blocked with microbiological gunge that forms considerably faster in bio-diesel. Bio road diesel is also highly corrosive and will degrade rubber diaphragms in mechanical lift pumps. The article did not say whether the anti- biological additives that some people put in red diesel tanks is effective against these bugs. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Brand new free on-line ALMANAC has just been started. It is called THE WILEY NAUTICAL ALMANAC  which  was launched on 11th May. It is still being developed but looks very hopeful. I will report back eventually.     Rocky May/2009

PLASTIC The progress of mankind has wreaked havoc on the environment in many ways, but few as depressing as revealed this year in the form of this image of a Laysan albatross carcase found in the Pacific Ocean. Mother birds fly to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch - an enormous floating vortex of plastic debris that has been brought together by ocean currents - and bring back what they think is food for their young. The chicks, which cannot digest the plastic, often starve to death. About 80 per cent of plastic debris in the ocean is discarded on land, and kills more than a million seabirds each year. The total global production of plastic reached 260 million tons this year, up from 150 million in the mid-1990s.

I AM THANKFUL:

For the wife who says it's hot dogs tonight, because she is home with me, and not out with someone else.

For the husband who is on the sofa being a couch potato, Because he is home with me and not out at the bars.

For the teenager who is complaining about doing dishes because it means she is at home, not on the streets.

For the taxes I pay because it means I am employed.

For the mess to clean after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends.

For the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have enough to eat.

For my shadow that watches me work because it means I am out in the sunshine

For a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, and gutters that need fixing because it means I have a home.

For all the complaining I hear about the government because it means we have freedom of speech.

For the parking spot I find at the far end of theparking lot because it means I am capable of walking and I have been blessed with transportation,

For my huge heating bill because it means I am warm.

For the lady behind me in church who sings off key because it means I can hear.

For the pile of laundry and ironing because it means I have clothes to wear.

For weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day because it means I have been capable of working hard.
For the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours because it means I am alive.

And finally, for too much e-mail because it means I have friends who are thinking of me.

Live well, laugh often, & love with all of your heart!
