PLYMOUTH LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS 17/10

DOCKYARD PORT OF PLYMOUTH – VTS REPORTING POINTS

1. This notice is a direction by the Queens Harbour Master Plymouth in exercise of powers conferred by the Dockyard Port of Plymouth Order 1999, and is issued pursuant to that Order, Schedule I Part II Regulation 30.

2. A new Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) reporting point, for inbound vessels only, has been established in Plymouth Sound.  Its charted position is due east of Melampus buoy on the recommended track for deep-draught vessels.  Reports made at this position are intended to promote awareness within The Sound and adjacent waters of the movement of larger vessels approaching Asia Pass, Smeaton Pass or Cobbler Channel.  This will assist vessels required not to impede the passage of such vessels to navigate so far as is practicable in such a way as to avoid the development of risk of collision.

3. All inbound vessels over 25m in length passing North of a line running due East from the charted position of Melampus Buoy (50° 21’.15N 004° 08’.72W) are to report to Longroom Port Control Station on IMM VHF Channel 14 their destination as “The Cattewater”, “Sutton Harbour”, “Millbay” or “The Hamoaze” as appropriate.

4. The sequence of reports to Longroom for inbound vessels over 25m in length from 1 February 2010 is as follows:-

a. On passing the line joining Penlee Point to the Shag Stone.

b. On passing Plymouth Breakwater.

c. On passing a line due East from the charted position of Melampus Buoy.
